The strength of a fence is below ground
A basic timber fence can be assembled relatively quickly. The difference between a cheap fence and a properly built one is often hidden underground.
Once the rails and palings are installed, you cannot see how deep the post holes are, how well the footings were formed or whether the foundations suit the height, ground and exposure of the fence. A new fence may look straight on completion while still being vulnerable to movement.
A solid timber fence catches a considerable amount of wind. That load is transferred through the posts and into the ground. If the holes are too shallow, the footings are undersized or the surrounding ground is soft, repeated movement can gradually loosen the posts.
The first sign may be a slight wobble. Over time, the fence can begin to lean, gates can drop out of alignment and rails or palings can pull apart. Correcting it may require dismantling sections of the fence and replacing the foundations that should have been right from the beginning.
Fencing and retaining walls planned together
On Auckland’s sloping properties, fences and retaining walls frequently meet. A fence may run along the top of a wall, share part of its structure or form one stage of a wider landscape construction project.
In these situations, the fence should not be treated as an afterthought. Its height, wind exposure, post positions and foundations need to work with the retaining wall, drainage, ground levels and available access.
